There has been a fad going on for about a few years now involving these colorful items made of silicone that teens wear nowadays. They’re commonly known as “Jelly Bracelets” or “Gel Bracelets”. These bracelets are available in different colors and various designs. But, along with these cute designs that teens like so much,come rumors and Urban Legends that parents, Educators and other conservative adults fear. These rumors revolving around the colorful bracelets made of silicone have become so controversial to the point that it was banned from many schools within the United States.
The legend revolves around a game called “snap”. When someone snaps your silicone bracelet, you will have to do sexual favors for that person. The favor ranges from kissing to lap dances to sexual intercourse depending on the color of the siliconebracelet that snapped.
These are the common intepretations and counterparts of sexual acts in relation to the color that snapped:
Yellow: Hugging
Purple: Kissing
Red: Lap Dance
Blue: Oral Sex
Black: Intercourse
It is no wonder that parents and educators from different parts of North America expressed their serious concern over an inexpensive piece of accessory.
But what parents don’t realize is that teens wear silicon bracelets not because they have any intention of expressing any interest in sexual activities but rather just because they’re cute. Teens nowadays are smart enough to know that they don’t have to do anything just because their silicon bracelet snapped or they are too innocent that they don’t know anything about sex at all.
Teens wear SiliconBracelets because they are fashionable an not because thay have any sexual meaning.
On the other hand, there are those who use these items for a special cause. Lance Armstrong for example wears silione bracelet not simply for fashion statement and definitely not for any sexual equivalent to its color. He wears them for a higher purpose and that is for his Foundation that supports Cancer victims and Cancer survivors.
In 2004, Lance Armstron wore his yellow Silicone Bracelet to promote LiveStrong, The Lance Armstrong Foundation. Through these SiliconBracelets, Livestrong has been able to raise funds for Cancer research and spread awareness about the disease it’s battling.
Ever since that time, more and more organizations and charities have utilized the popularity of this fashion item. With different colors of Silicone Bracelets, you could identify what charity or what disease one person is fighting against or promoting about. It ranges from calamities such as hurricanes and floods to diseases like diabetes and epilepsy.
In time, perhaps the urban legends revolving around these bracelets would be totally forgotten to give way to the more noble use of silicone Awareness Bracelets.

Ever since Lance Armstrong, the most prominent figure in cycling history so far, ever wore those yellow bracelets made of silicone, the fad of using jelly bracelets to promote and spread awareness has increased. Charities and organizations have long been aware that for an awareness program or campaign to work, one needs an icon popular and accessible enough to have their message sent accross successfully.
It is unfortunate though that not every Foundation has an athlete, showbiz personality or celebrity as popular and successful as Lance Armstrong. This is the reason why Organizations and charitable institutions utilizes novelty items to represent their cause.
Ribbons, shirts, caps, stickers and the like has always been used to promote and spread awareness of such noble causes. some of them have been successful while many have not. During the past few years, Lance Armstrong’s icon, had so much of an impact that many other institutions replicated that idea.
Today, a lot of foundations have been using Silicone Bracelets and each of these foundations have their own color or pattern.
One of the more active foundation is the Susan G Komen Breast Cancer Foundation that has been helping breast cancer victims for quite some time now.Their icon is actually their color which is pink.
A lot of items have been produced and introduced to the market with the same intention as to promote awareness regarding breast cancer. There have been car magnets, drinking bottles, shirts, caps, jewelry and many others, all colored pink so that you could identify its cause.
There have been Breast Cancer Awareness Bracelets produced in Silicone as well. What is so interesting with these SiliconeBracelet is that you could engrave your massage on the band. There are a few like the ones shown in this photograph that shows its concern for family members, friends and women in general who may have been victims ore are just simply vulnerable to the sickness. It’s cheap, simple, easy to wear but very effective. That’s what i like about Silicone Bracelets.
There are other variants and products as well that you could wear to express your participation with the cause. Some of them are more expensive than those of the Jelly Bracelets. But along with the expensive price is the promise that those items are sold to help fund research on breast cancer.
Whatever is more effective, whichever is more affordable, the most important thing is that these Silicone Bracelets and other novelty items are used for a higher purpose and are true to its cause.

Since the sensation of silicone bracelets exploded, multiple variants of the item has been available to the public. Why not? It’s an inexpensive product that could be easily manipulated and designed. If you look around you, you will notice that many profit and non-profit organisations, foundations, schools and government offices have joined the band wagon in using siliconebracelets to either promote or introduce themselves. And each of these individuals, groups or companies are handing out or selling silicon bracelets that are custom made in relation to their identity, cause or agenda.
Groups with noble objectives hand out these items with messages written or engraved into them. Usually, they handout bands that have plain colors. But even so, they still apeal to many people since it is easy to wear and it doesn’t bother you at all. Not to mention that wearing silicon bracelets is a trend.
Universities, colleges, and sometimes even high schools, will have their own designs as well. You can easily tell which school the siliconbracelet was from since the designs are very explicit about it. It would contain the school’s logo, mascot or motto, with the school’s name printed around the bracelet. Silicon bracelets from schools are much more interesting to look at since their designs look more complex and they have multiple colors as well.
Companies even use these items for marketing purposes. Who haven’t seen Silicon Bracelets with a company logo printed on it. It is compact, could be handed out to consumers easily, and is a much more affordable medium for advertising compared to TV, Radio or Print Advertisements.
What’s even more amazing is even Politicians use SiliconeBracelets during campaigs. Jelly Bracelets with a presidential candidate’s name printedon it in bold letters aren’t that surprising anymore. Amusing perhaps, but not unexpected.
If you think about it, using Silicon Bracelets for campaigning and spreading awareness would be the most effective approach right now since who you really want to reach are the very people to whom these items apeal to: teens.
Yes, some teens even collect Silicon Bracelets. They compare them and sometimes swap bracelets with their friends. And since they wear them all the time, other teens who would notice the custom design will be exposed to the message embedded in that wristband.
Silicone Bracelets have a lot of potential. Either in fashion, campaign or awareness programs. As long as this cheap item could maintain its apeal to teens, you could expect to see more interesting, cute, funny and even absurd customized Silicone Bracelets.
